George Soros( is an American currency speculator, stock investor, businessman, philanthropist, and political activist
He was one of many Jews from Budapest who were endowed with extraordinary qualities of survival and re inventiveness on emigration to the West and who changed thereby the course of history of our world to date.He was "nurtured" in England and others from Hungary were nourished in the city of lights Paris. He has a background as activist and Philanthropist as one of a group that transformed a world bent on fascism to better their democratic roots through his Philanthropy.Note his description of the Nazi occupation and his role to writer Michael Lewis.Young Soros had to hide his Jewishness.
George Soros is the son of the Esperantist writer Tivadar
Soros. Tivadar (also known as Teodoro) was a Hungarian Jew, who was a prisoner of war during
and after World War I and eventually
escaped from Russia to rejoin his family in Budapest.[5][6]
The
family changed its name in 1936 from Schwartz to Soros, in response to growing anti-semitism with the
rise of Fascism. Tivadar liked the new
name because it is a palindrome and because it has
a meaning. Although the specific meaning is left unstated in Kaufmann's
biography, in Hungarian, soros
means "next in line, or designated successor", and in Esperanto, it means "will
soar".[7] His son
George was taught to speak Esperanto from birth and thus is one of the rare native Esperanto
speakers. George Soros later said that he grew up in a Jewish home, and
that his parents were cautious with their religious roots.[8]
George
Soros has been married and divorced twice, to Annaliese Witschak, and to Susan Weber Soros. He
has five children: Robert, Andrea, Jonathan (with his first wife, Annaliese);
Alexander, Gregory (with his second wife, Susan). His elder brother, Paul
Soros, a private investor and philanthropist, is a retired engineer, who
headed Soros Associates, an international engineering firm based in New
York, and established the Paul
and Daisy Soros Fellowships for Young Americans[9][10].
George Soros' nephew Peter Soros, a son of Paul Soros, is married to the former Flora Fraser, a
daughter of Lady Antonia Fraser and
the late Sir Hugh
Fraser, and a stepdaughter of the late 2005 Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter.[11]
[edit]
Native Hungary, and move to England
Soros was thirteen years old in March
1944 when Nazi Germany took military control over Hungary[12]. Soros
worked for the Jewish Council for two days[5],
which had been established during the Nazi occupation of Hungary to forcibly
carry out Nazi and Hungarian government anti-Jewish measures. Soros later
described this time to writer Michael Lewis:
The
Jewish Council asked the little kids to hand out the deportation notices. I was
told to go to the Jewish Council. And there I was given these small slips of
paper...It said report to the rabbi seminary at 9 a.m....And I was given this
list of names. I took this piece of paper to my father. He instantly recognized
it. This was a list of Hungarian Jewish lawyers. He said, "You deliver the slips
of paper and tell the people that if they report they will be deported.[13]
To
avoid his son's being apprehended by the Nazis, Soros's father paid a Ministry
of Agriculture employee to have Soros spend the summer of 1944 living with him
and posing as the godson. Young Soros had to hide his Jewishness even as the
official was overseeing the confiscation of Jewish property.[14]
In the
following year, Soros survived the battle of Budapest in
which Soviet-Romanian, German and Hungarian forces
fought house-to-house through the city. Soros first traded currencies during the Hungarian hyperinflation of
1945–1946.
Soros emigrated to England in 1947 and graduated
from the London School of
Economics in 1952. While a student of the philosopher Karl Popper, Soros funded
himself by taking jobs as a railway porter and a waiter at Quaglino's restaurant
where he was told that with hard work he might one day become head waiter. He
eventually secured an entry-level position with London merchant bank Singer &
Friedlander.

Szilard the lightning quick thinker and eccentric -these qualities not fortuitious
Leo Szilard was eccentric in his career from inception .I would like to address in this post the Einstein Letter to FDR as instigated in part by Szilard. Also Jacob Bronowki's The Ascent of Man, "The Making of the Atomic Bomb". Also the Szilard Lecture on War.
- Einstein was troubled and ambivalent by his participation in the letter to FDR
- This comprised a tragic paradox of fate for this avowed pacifist
- He started the signal unleashing the most horrible weapons of destruction.
- The scientific community in totum was aware of the possibilities of atomic energy.
- These were actively discussed in American newspapers and magazines.
- Scientists that fled Nazi persecution suspected their former collaborators would pursue the "development" of atomic weapons
- Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner and Edward Teller would approach Einstein and ask him to communicate a sense of urgency to Roosevelt. The letter was delivered by Alexander Sachs but not until October 11,1939.
- FDR's reply . He wrote einstein October 19th that he formed a committee consisting of Sachs and representatives from the Army and Navy to study uranium.
- The president acted in the belief (Uranium Committee of 1939) that he could not risk allowing Hitler to achieve unilateral possession of "powerful bombs".
- This was the first of many decisions leading to the Manhattan Project. (And the atomic bomb of WWII.)
- The text of the actual letter begins August 2,1939 and alerts FR to the work of Fermi and Szilard and alludes to a manuscript communicated to him (Einstein)
- The element uranium could be an important source of energy in the immediate future.
- Certain situations call for watchfulness and quick action re: the following facts and situations.Through Joliot in France and Szilard and Fermi in America, that it may become possible to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium, by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of new radium-like elements would be generated. (Quote) A single bomb might destroy a port but be too heavy for air transport.
- The US has poor uranium supply areas-Some good ore in Canada and the former Czechoslovakia. The richest source is the Belgian Congo.
- Necessity for unofficial permanent contact that the government trusts, between administration and US physicists working on these chain reactions.
- This liaison would maintain government contact, and secure ongoing funding beyond the modest university budgets., securing cooperation of industrial laboratories and private contributions
- Germany has stopped the sale of uranium from the Czech mines. Her hasty action might be understood in the context that the son of the German under secretary of state von Weiznacker is attached to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute where American work on Uranium is being repeated at present.
Einstein's Letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt
Manhattan Project
History The Early Years (1900 - 1939)
"I really only acted as a mail box.
They (Szilard, et al) brought me a finished letter and I simply signed it" -
Albert Einstein
in a apology to his biographer Antonina Vallentin.
In
later years, those close to Einstein would report that he was very troubled by
his participation. In a tragic paradox of
fate, he, a vowed pacifist, gave
the starting signal for the most horrible of weapons of
destruction.
Webmaster's Note: Keeping in mind what you have learned thus
far, it is important to realize that not only was the
scientific community as
a whole acutely aware of the possibilities of atomic energy, it was also
actively discussed in
American magazines and newspapers. In addition, the
scientists that had fled Nazi persecution were worried that their
former
scientific collaborators would actively pursue the possibility of atomic
weapons. This led Leo Szilard, with the
assistance of Eugene Wigner and
Edward Teller, to approach is friend, Albert Einstein, and encourage him
to
communicate a "sense of urgency" to President Roosevelt.
Alexander
Sachs, a friend and unofficial advisor to Roosevelt, was tapped to carry
Einsteins' letter. However, for a variety
of reasons, Sachs was not able to
meet with F.D.R. and deliver the letter until October 11, 1939
Roosevelt
wrote Einstein back on October 19th and informed him that he had set up a
committee consisting of Sachs
and representatives from the Army and Navy to
study uranium. Events ultimately proved that the President was a man
of
considerable action once a course of action was chosen. In fact,
Roosevelt's approval of the Uranium Committee in
October of 1939, based on
his belief that the United States could not take the risk of allowing Hitler to
achieve unilateral
possession of "extremely powerful bombs," was merely the
first decision among many that ultimately led to the
establishment of the
only atomic bomb effort that succeeded in World War II - the Manhattan
Project.

Sir:
Some recent work by E. Fermi
and L. Szilard, which has been communicated to me in a manuscript, leads me to
expect
that the element uranium may be turned into a new and important source
of energy in the immediate future. Certain
aspects of the situation which has
arisen seem to call for watchfulness and, if necessary, quick action on the part
of the
Administration. I believe therefore that it is my duty to bring to
your attention the following facts and recommendations.
In the course of the
last four months it has been made probable - through the work of Joliot in
France as well as Fermi
and Szilard in America - that it may become possible
to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium, by
which vast
amounts of power and large quantities of new radium-like elements would be
generated. Now it appears
almost certain that this could be achieved in the
immediate future.
This new phenomenon would also lead to the construction of
bombs, and it is conceivable - though much less certain -
that extremely
powerful bombs of a new type, may thus be constructed. A single bomb of this
type, carried by boat and
exploded in a port, might very well destroy the
whole port together with some of the surrounding territory. However,
such
bombs might very well prove to be too heavy for transportation by
air.
Page 2...
The United States has only very poor areas of uranium in
moderate quantities. There is some good ore in Canada and
the former
Czechoslovakia, while the most important source of uranium is the Belgian
Congo.
In view of this situation you may think it desirable to have some
permanent contact maintained between the
Administration and the group of
physicists working on chain reactions in America. One possible way of achieving
this

might be for you to entrust with this
task a person who has your confidence and who could perhaps serve in an
unofficial
capacity. His task might comprise the following:
a) to approach
Government Departments, keep them informed of the further development, and put
forward
recommendations for Government action, giving particular attention to
the problem of securing a supply of uranium ore
for the United States.
b)
to speed up the experimental work, which is at present being carried on within
the limits of the budgets of University
laboratories, by providing funds, if
such funds be required, through his contacts with private persons who are
willing to
make contributions for this cause, and perhaps also by obtaining
the co-operation of industrial laboratories which have
the necessary
equipment.
I understand that Germany has actually stopped the sale of uranium
from the Czechoslovakian mines which she has
taken over. That she should have
taken such hasty action might perhaps be understood on the ground that the son
of the
German Under-Secretary of State, von Weiznacker, is attached to the
Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute in Berlin where some of
the American work on uranium
is now being repeated.
Yours very truly,
(Albert Einstein)

Personality
Szilárd was well known to his colleagues as an eccentric,
lightning-quick thinker who "seemed fond of startling people" with strange,
seemingly incongruous, yet extremely perceptive statements and questions. He was
also extremely good at predicting political events. He is said to have predicted World War
I as a boy, and when the Nazi party first appeared, he
predicted that it would one day control Europe. In 1934, he foresaw the
details of World War II. He then made
a habit of residing in hotel rooms, with a packed suitcase always on hand. He
often did a lot of his best thinking while taking a bath.

A two tier world not to forget the poor at the G20 conference while discussing bonuses
- We could allocate 0.7% of the stimulus packages for developing countries
- For safety net funding for the most at risk
- This gesture/act would prove to the world that this G-Group will not endorse a two tier world.
- Fat chance this plan will ever come to fruition.
- 50 billion for trade support is listed below and will combine a 1 billion dollar investment that will accomplish the following:
a. with financinjg from governments and regional dvelopment banks
b. leveraged with risk sharing from private sector partners
If we purposely fail to alleviate this poverty problem, it will surely face us starkly in another way and give rise to a seedbed of possibvle later terrorism.
Newser) – While world leaders waste bicker, the global economic crisis hurts.
more than your 401(k), Nicholas Kristof writes in the New York Times. The crisis
will cause another 22 children to die every hour in 2009—and that’s the World
Bank’s best-case scenario. So it’s really discouraging when European leaders
indulge their “penchant for sniping at the Unites States instead of doing more
to resolve the mess.”
“In London, Washington and Paris, people talk of
bonuses or no bonuses,” said the World Bank president. In the poorest nations,
“the struggle is for food or no food.” A week’s worth of interest on the $8.4
trillion in financial bailouts could all but eliminate death during childbirth,
Kristof notes. The G-20 could address the poor with negligible sums—but instead,
it’ll likely squabble as usual
LONDON, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Leaders from the Group of 20 (G20) developed and
emerging economies should not forget the world's poor population when they meet
in London later this week, World Bank President Robert Zoellick said on
Tuesday.
"In London, Washington and Paris people talk of bonuses or no
bonuses. In parts of Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, the struggle is for
food or no food," Zoellick said in a speech ahead of the G20 summit, which was
released in London.
The World Bank warned that in the wake of the financial
crisis, there would be a sharp slowdown in economic growth in the developing
world this year, putting more poor people at risk,
It was estimated that
economic growth in developing countries would slow sharply to 2.1 percent in
2009, a more than three percentage point decline from last year, while the world
economy would contract by 1.7 percent this year compared to growth of 1.9
percent in 2008, the first global decline since the Second World War.
Growth
would actually decline in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Latin
America and the Caribbean.
About 53 million more people would be trapped in
poverty this year, subsisting on less than 1.25 U.S. dollars a day, because of
the crisis.
Zoellick said world leaders should learn from previous economic
crises in Latin America in the 1980s and Asia in the 1990s and not repeat the
mistake of ignoring the plight of the most vulnerable. Developing countries
needed to be part of the global solution to the global crisis.
"Isn't it time
to institutionalize support for the most vulnerable during crises, especially
those not of their own making?" said Zoellick, who has proposed that developed
countries allocate 0.7 percent of the stimulus packages to a fund for developing
countries.
"A commitment to put in place structures to support and fund
safety nets for those most at risk would go a long way to show that this G-group
will not endorse a two tier world, with summits for financial systems, and
silence for the poor." he added, calling for market economies with a human
face.
As global trade in goods and services was predicted to fall six percent
this year, the largest decline in 80 years, Zoellick in particular called on G20
leaders to back a new 50-billion-dollar fund for trade support.
The fund will
combine a 1-billion-dollar investment from the World Bank with financing from
governments and regional development banks. These public contributions can be
leveraged by a risk-sharing arrangement with major private sector
partners.
"G20 backing will help us gain more momentum, thereby increasing
support," Zoellick said.
The World Bank chief said many of the immediate
challenges of the crisis could be addressed if the G20 reformed and empowered
existing international institutions to help resist protectionism, evaluate the
effectiveness of stimulus packages and monitor banking reforms.
"If leaders
are serious about creating new global responsibilities or governance, let them
start by modernizing multilateralism to empower the World Trade Organization,
the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to monitor national
policies," Zoellick said.
"Bringing sunlight to national decision-making
would contribute to transparency, accountability, and consistency across
national policies," he added.

AYAHUASCA WHOLISTIC HEALING AND PURGES -ITS MANY PARAMETERS BEYOND THE INTELLECT
The plant medicine works in conjunction with the body's spiritual connections and is a consistent and constant purgative of the body's dark forces. The plant is a catalyst, and is not the sole solution to the dark energies of the body.To attain our true souls or selves is the objective. The attained new levels comprise higher divine wisdom wherein our minds are moved from over stimulation of the intellect which is counter productive to reaching that higher self. The attainment of balance to receive universal teachings is the goal of the plant treatments. Noteworthy are the references to the following:
- yogic tradition whereby the body is prepared over a very long period to encompass and absorb high levels of light for which it is not accustomed.
- Yoga accomplishes the same task in decades as to what the plant therapy does in a much shorter space of time.
- the dark energies are truly the plague of the West and stop progress in its tracks through fear, time constraints, money, doubt and addictions.
- This medicine has been implemented regionally for centuries and has been bridged to the West to those truly desiring the help of this medicine.
- Not all can endure the purging process and completely eliminate the walls of ego. Those drawn to the medicine become Light Ambassadors and are to help others .
- This technique and healing is much akin to the Hellenistic and secretive schools such as the Eleusinian Mysteries and the Gnostic ceremonies as if they were transplanted to Andean or South American soil. These ceremonies, not surprisingly, were labeled as heresies by the Church authorities of the third century CE.
- The common Western "superstitions" will again rear their ugly heads: doubt, association with enteogens and hallucinogens, and associating shamans with primitive "witch doctors".
- Light Levels Shamans, quite to the contrary, are using ayahuasca as an anti drug to purge the body of the dark forces that crept in through the open doors of the body and done willingly to admit these forces. IT RELEASES DRUG ADDICTION AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION.
- The transcending of western belief systems is a sine qua non to achieve the optimum results. Some people are just not prepared for this phase and when they are, they will know by experience the time of their preparation.
- The rapidity of the healing is the purging power of the plant. All the spiritual work is limited if the dark energies remain to confront and block us at every step and the obstacles are a constant hindrance. How much energy would be freed if they were not there in the body? Releasing does not always require a medicinal purge.
- Hidden energies and entities are hidden in the body and in the West the vast majority are in the mind.
- The medicine reboots the body, takes apart the brain and reassembles it as it was "new" initially.
- The shift to this secret doorway is now here right in the offing.
- Again , purging fear and doubt can arise thinking of the words shaman and "cult". Ego and overactive mind chatter is a challenge.
- Your higher self, the medicine spirits and God work together in common in the purge.Your most debilitating issue ready to purge continues in "that order".
- The medicine often needs to break through resistance as a test of faith.Other would be adepts desiring healing will get their diminished egos handed to them after the ceremonies and healing process is initiated.
- Layer by layer purging is often necessary for inbred and ingrained "belief systems and crossed energies"
- After the completed purge one must learn new body and spiritual management skills including keeping dark entities out and not feeding the unpurged entities
- Staying connected to the medicine and the learning therefrom.Strong connections to the Divine to check your integrity.
- The light spirits remain in the body forever: the longer on the Ayahuasca path the more medicine they have in their body and the medicine can have various uses: to channel, learn divination, heal, see, with out the need of ceremony. Psychic and healing abilities "increase the more medicine one has,and Divine Wisdom can be accessed at any time.
- Divine Wisdom is beyond words and is multi tiered and multi leveled and the reading of books often taints this understanding. It's adepts often write the books. It is often clear and often in the offing when you need it and preempts the asking of so many intellectual questions. It is an integrated balance between the phjysical and spiritual worlds and there is a challenge that the "willing" accept. KEY; The physical world of the "now" is very different than the chimera we see around us.
This, my friends, is the amazing job of the Ayahuasca medicine. To purge
the body of these low frequencies so we can get back to our true selves. As
things purge, we rise Light levels (frequencies or vibrations). On the new
levels, lay higher Divine wisdom, as our minds are moved out of over-stimulation
of the intellect, and into balance to receive Universal teachings. As outlined
in yogic tradition, the body must be prepared in a process to handle high levels
of Light, otherwise the nerves would fry. From what I understand (but not from
personal experience) yogic tradition can also accomplish this same task, though
it takes decades of intense discipline and study, and frankly most of the dark
entities that plague the West will stop people before they start (based on
logistics, time constraints, money, doubt, addictions, etc.) This is why the
medicine has begun to bridge itself to the West...because we need help. Not
everyone is prepared to accept this help, but for those who are, those who
truly, truly want to know, and are willing to do the work, it has become
available to them. Then, of those drawn to the medicine, some will be able to
delve deeper into themselves, therefore understanding the world around them, and
eventually become Light ambassadors to assist others seeking similar process (in
various forms.) Not everyone will be able to break down the walls of their ego,
or release the addictions that they once loved, or simply endure the physical
challenges of the purging process. Some will fold under the Western
consciousness, full of fear and doubt, associating ayahuasca with hallucinogenic
drugs and witchdoctors. Done with high Light-levels shamans, therefore holding
the integrity of themselves and the medicine, ayahuasca is the anti-drug. Not
only does is purge the chemical makeup of drugs, excessive alcohol, and sexual
exchange, it purges all the dark stuff that got inside the body while those
doors were wide open. Ayahuasca is renowned for releasing of addiction energy,
applied wherever it applied, including drugs and alcohol.
Releasing a society stigma (like the "Ayahuasca is a drug" example) is just one of the many belief systems that will need to be transcended. If a person is not able to start with an easy one like that, the medicine will naturally filter out those who are simply not prepared to understand the levels that will be coming. There is no judgment because not everyone has a desire to know all of this. This is the "Red Pill" in the Matrix. Choosing the blue is not bad, it is simply a choice. For those who desire to know, this may be the clearest, fastest option. It may even be simply too fast for some, in turn they will be drawn somewhere else for their training. You don't yell at a toddler for not being able to walk yet. Things move when the person is ready. Still skeptical? Don't let that block you. Because what if I'm right? The possibilities are too good not to at least find out for yourself.
The purge is what makes the Ayahuasca unique. That's why it works so fast. Because it is physically pulling this stuff out of your body. You can do all the energy and spiritual work you want, but until these dark entities physically leave the body, you are still walking around struggling against them. You may have gotten a pretty good handle on them, but it's so normal you don't know how much energy would be freed up if they weren't there. Certain types can be released without a medicinal purge, but not all. Entities and energies are hidden all over the body. For Westerners, the vast majority are in the mind. The medicine basically takes apart your brain and puts it back together, the way it came in when it was new. This is why some call it the Vine of Death/Rebirth...you get to reboot the physical body, pure, but this time as an adult. People simply don't know what they are missing out of life, because so few people in the West had access to, and have actually been able to delve into to this "secret doorway". Luckily, the shift is here. Relief is here. People who want to get back to real life, in the way they always knew in their souls existed, welcome home. We don't have to wait until we die to get there.
The purges can be challenging, make no mistake. Often (but not always) the person feels the energy or emotion as it is leaving the body. Purging fear = extremely scary. Purging doubt = thinking all these shamans are out of their minds and this is some kind of cult. Purging ego = getting triggered by the guy with the bigger ego during the day of the ceremony. Purging overactive mind chatter = exhausting thought spirals. Physical purges (vomit, diarrhea, gas, hot/cold temperatures, yawning, sweating, vibrating/shaking, crying, abnormal breathing, fidgeting) are all catalysts that the dark energy attaches to (either the physical liquid, gas or breath) to get out. It is the much more efficient than energy work alone (though most people feel extreme energies as well). Not only do challenging purges move out darkness fast, they train the body and mind to be able to endure the physical world. The big picture keeps stretching, allowing person's world to look more manageable. The body is strengthened, allowing for higher tolerance levels for life in general. And the dark energies are purged, giving the person a cleaner slate.
Your Higher Self, the medicine spirits, and God all work together to prioritize the healing for each person individually. They look for the most debilitating issue in your world that you are physically ready to purge, and continue in that order. For some, they will need to see the Light at the end of the tunnel before they even start. They may have a couple of amazing ceremonies before the purge begins. Others won't feel the effects for several ceremonies, while the medicine works to break through their walls, also testing their faith and trust (or sparing them from seeing something they can't handle). Others will get their egos handed to them in full-on boot camp style. Others get the nurturing mother they always wanted. Most get a combination of all of these, depending on what they need at the time. Complete entities can be purged in one ceremony, but for more ingrained belief systems and crossed energies, they tend to happen layer by layer. As mentioned before, the body can only handle so much stretching to new Light levels in one night (and once the purge is out, the body moves closer to its natural state: happy, healthy, humble, wise, and Light.
Once the purge is complete, the medicine trains on management skills. Management is learning how to keep those entities out, and not feed the ones that have not yet been purged. This is the physical practice of staying connected to the medicine, and what you are learning from it, outside of ceremony (of course, there really is no "outside of ceremony!") This training allows you to take back authority over your body and your life, with a strong line in to the Divine to keep check of your integrity and guidance. Naturally, as a person takes in the plant medicine, the Light spirits are in the body (to remain forever). Therefore the longer a person pursues the Ayahuasca path, the more medicine they have in their body. This medicine can be used to channel, learn divination, heal, see, etc, all without the need to physically be in ceremony. Psychic and healing abilities increase the more medicine one has. Divine wisdom is not something that needs only to be accessed during ceremony hours.
Which brings me to the next point: understanding. The levels of Divine wisdom and understanding are simply beyond words. Often people have to stop reading books while in apprenticeship because they find it is tainting their direct learning. These will soon be some of the people writing the books. Sometimes the wisdom is clear and given, other times it is simply there when you need it (and it's new to you too!) Having access to these kinds of answers makes you stop asking so many "intellectual" questions. It all comes clear in its due time. Patience is the first rule of apprenticeship, while being prepared to hold on tight for the lightening-fast ride.
So what is Ayahuasca? It is the key to the doorway of REAL LIFE. For people who want to walk the integrated balance between the physical and the spiritual worlds, enjoying and appreciating who they truly are, without judgment, without fear. For those who want to experience life's FULL GAMUT, and are ready, willing, and able to accept the challenge. You know who you are. And if you don't, and you want to be, break through just enough walls to get yourself at the doorway. There is a physical world right here that is very different than you think. It's everything you ever thought it could be. Your inner hits were right...you KNEW it was real. Whatever the challenges, follow the call. It is SO worth it.

Views on the use of nuclear weapons
In 1932, Szilárd had read about the
fictional "atomic bombs" described in H. G. Wells's science fiction novel The World Set Free.
This inspired him to be the first scientist to seriously examine the science
behind the creation of nuclear weapons. As a
scientist, he was the first person to conceive of a device that, using a nuclear chain
reaction as fuel, could be used as a bomb.
As a survivor of a devastated Hungary after World War
I, and having witnessed the subsequent terror
of the Reds and the Whites, Szilárd developed an enduring passion for the
preservation of human life and freedom, especially
freedom to communicate ideas.
He hoped that the U.S. government would not use
nuclear weapons because of their potential for use against civilian populations.
Szilárd hoped that the mere threat of such weapons would force Germany and/or Japan to surrender. He drafted the Szilárd petition
advocating demonstration of the atomic bomb. However with the European war
concluded and the U.S. taking heavy casualties in the Pacific, the new U.S.
President Harry Truman sided with
advisors and chose to use atomic
bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki over the protestations of Szilárd and
other scientists.
[edit]
After the war
In 1947, Szilárd switched fields of study because of his horror
of atomic weapons, moving from physics to molecular biology, working extensively
with Aaron
Novick. He proposed, in February 1950, a new kind of nuclear weapon using cobalt as a tamper,
a cobalt
bomb, which he said might wipe out all life on the planet. U.S. News &
World Report featured an interview with Szilárd in its August 15, 1960
issue, "President Truman Didn't Understand." His penchant to use language
provocatively and say things which most readers would dismiss as absurd is well
evidenced in this quote from that interview: "But again, I don't believe this
staging a demonstration was the real issue, and in a sense it is just as immoral
to force a sudden ending of a war by threatening violence as by using violence.
My point is that violence would not have been necessary if we had been willing
to negotiate."
In 1961 Szilárd published a book of short stories, The Voice
of the Dolphins, in which he wrestled with the moral and ethical issues raised
by the Cold
War and his own role in the development of atomic
weapons. The title story described an international biology research
laboratory in Central Europe. This became reality following a meeting
in 1962 with Victor F.
Weisskopf, James Watson and John
Kendrew. When the European
Molecular Biology Laboratory was established, the library was named The Szilard Library
and the library stamp features dolphins.
Szilárd married Gertrud Weiss in
1951.[7]
In 1960,
Szilárd was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He
underwent radiation therapy at New
York's Memorial
Hospital using a treatment regimen that he designed himself. A second round
of treatment followed in 1962; Szilárd's cancer remained in remission
thereafter.
In 1962, Szilárd was part of a group of scientists who founded
the Council for a
Livable World. The Council's goal was to warn the public and Congress of the
threat of nuclear war and lead the way to rational arms control and nuclear
disarmament.
He spent his last years as a fellow at the Salk
Institute in San Diego.
In May 1964,
Szilárd died in his sleep of a heart attack at
the age of sixty-six. At his memorial it was said that Death was required to
come to him while asleep, or otherwise he would have outwitted it.[citation

Leo Szilard Met HG Wells -progressive intellectual
1929 and 30 I believe were pivotal years for Szilard and in 30 he tried to form a group of international progressive intellectuals based on HG Wells' Open Conspiracy and this short period will be further documented in another post. That his association with HG Wells was not by chance but I could say "providential" in its fullest sense is staring me in the face as of this writing.
1929 Filed German patent application on the cyclotron. Met H.G. Wells.
Published, in Zeitschrift für Physik, his classic analysis of Maxwell's Demon,
in which he showed that the entropy of a unit of information was equal to k ln
2.
1930 Met future wife Gertrude (Trude) Weiss. Attempted to organize an
international movement of progressive intellectuals based on H.G. Wells' Open
Conspiracy. Taught theoretical physics seminar with Erwin Schrödinger and John
von Neumann. Taught seminar on nuclear physics and chemistry with Lise
Meitner.
Leo Szilard-"the world was headed for sorrow"
In 38 Szilard accepted a research position at Columbia in Manhattan and was joined by Fermi. They learned about nuclear fission in 39 and concluded the element uranium could sustain a chain reaction and their experiment validated significant neutron multiplication. They knew they were opening the door to nuclear weapons. Leo saw the flashes after turning the switch, turned it off and went home. "That night ,I knew the world was headed for sorrow."
The Germans were also in the race to produce a nuclear chain reaction. Their attempts to control the reaction using graphite were unsuccessful due to the method of producing graphite
- using boron carbide rods adding impurities into the graphite and disabling the whole operation
- Szilard had graphite manufacturers produce boron free graphite
- On Dec 2,1942, the first human controlled chain reaction occurred.
Szilard started the Manhattan project
- he drafted a confidential letter to FDR explaining the possibility of nuclear weapons
- he warned the Nazis were working on such weapons
- encouraged development of a US program
- In Aug 39, he approached his old friend and collaborator Albert Einstein
- convincing him to sign a joint letter to FDR -The Einstein-Szilárd letter
- Research into nuclear fission by the US government was established and ultimately resulted in the Manhattan Project.
- The letter was handed to General Edwin Watson
- Szilard moved to the University of Chicago to continue work on the project
- Along with Fermi , he constructed the first neutronic reactor- 1942 the first self sustaining nuclear chain reaction
- Szilard was dismayed that scientists were losing control of their research to the military and clashed with Gen Leslie Groves military project head. Szilard resented the US further for its use of the Atomic bomb in Japan. He thought lives could have been spared.
In 1938 Szilárd accepted an offer to conduct research at Columbia University
in Manhattan, and moved to New York, and
was soon joined by Fermi. After learning about nuclear fission in 1939, they
concluded that uranium would be the element
capable of sustaining a chain reaction. Szilárd and Fermi conducted a simple
experiment at Columbia and discovered significant neutron multiplication in
uranium, proving that the chain reaction was possible and opening the way to
nuclear weapons. Szilárd later described the event: "We turned the switch, saw
the flashes, watched for ten minutes, then switched everything off and went
home. That night I knew the world was headed for sorrow".[2]
At
around that time the Germans and others were in a race to produce a nuclear
chain reaction. German attempts to control the chain reaction sought to do so
using graphite, but these attempts proved unsuccessful. Szilárd realized
graphite was indeed perfect for controlling chain reactions, just as the Germans
had determined, but that the method of producing graphite used boron
carbide rods, and the minute amount of boron impurities in the
manufactured graphite was enough to stop the chain reaction. Szilárd had
graphite manufacturers produce boron-free graphite. As a result, the first
human-controlled chain reaction occurred on 2 December 1942.[3]

The Manhattan Project
Szilárd was directly responsible for the creation of
the Manhattan Project. He
drafted a confidential letter to Franklin D.
Roosevelt explaining the possibility of nuclear weapons, warning of Nazi work on
such weapons and encouraging the development of a program which could lead
to their creation. In August 1939 he approached his old friend and collaborator Albert Einstein and
convinced him to sign the letter, lending the weight of his fame to the
proposal.[4] The Einstein-Szilárd
letter led directly to the establishment of research into nuclear fission by
the U.S. government and ultimately to the creation of the Manhattan Project; FDR
handed the letter off to an aide, General Edwin M. "Pa" Watson
with the instruction: "Pa, this requires action!"[5] Later,
Szilárd moved to the University of
Chicago to continue work on the project. There, along with Fermi, he helped
to construct the first "neutronic reactor", a uranium and graphite "atomic
pile" in which the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was
achieved, in 1942.
As the war continued, Szilárd became increasingly
dismayed that scientists were losing control over their research to the
military, and clashed many times with General Leslie Groves, military
head of the project. His resentment towards the U.S.
government was exacerbated by his failed attempts to avoid the use of the
atomic bomb in war
through having a test organised that could be witnessed by Japanese observers
who would then have the opportunity to surrender and spare lives.[6]
Szilárd
became a naturalized citizen
of the United States in
1943.

Early life
Szilárd was born into a Jewish family from Budapest at the time
of the Austro-Hungarian
monarchy before World War I as the son of a civil engineer. From
1908-1916 he attended Reáliskola in his home town. He was enrolled as an
engineering student at Budapest
Technical University in 1916 but had to join the Austro-Hungarian
Army in 1917 as officer-candidate where he was honorably discharged at the
end of the war. In 1919 he resumed engineering studies at Budapest Technical
University but soon decided to leave Hungary because of the rising antisemitism under the Horthy regime which led
to the introduction of a numerus clausus for
Jewish students at Hungary's universities. He continued engineering studies at Technische
Hochschule (Institute of Technology) in Berlin-Charlottenburg. He soon
changed to physics there and took physics
classes from Einstein, Planck,
and Max
von Laue. His dissertation on thermodynamics Über die
thermodynamischen Schwankungserscheinungen (On The Manifestation of
Thermodynamic Fluctuations) in 1922 was praised by Einstein and awarded the
highest honor. In 1923 he received the doctorate in physics from the Humboldt University of
Berlin. He was appointed as assistant to von Laue at the University of
Berlin's Institute for Theoretical Physics in 1924. In 1927 he finished his habilitation and became a
Privatdozent (instructor) in Physics at University of Berlin. During his time in
Berlin he was working on numerous technical inventions (1928 German patent application
on the linear accelerator,
1929 German patent application on the cyclotron, since 1926 work
with Einstein on the construction of a refrigerator
without moving parts (US patent 1,781,541 on November 11, 1930).

Developing the idea of the nuclear chain reaction
An
image from the Fermi-Szilárd "neutronic reactor" patent
In 1933 Szilárd fled
to London to escape Nazi persecution, where he read an article written by Ernest Rutherford in The Times
which rejected the possibility of using atomic energy for practical purposes.
Although nuclear fission had not
yet been discovered, Szilárd was reportedly so annoyed at this dismissal that he
conceived of the idea of the nuclear chain reaction while walking to work at St Bartholomew's
Hospital waiting for traffic lights to change
on Southampton Row in Bloomsbury, though his friend Jacob Bronowski notes
that he never knew Szilárd to wait for traffic lights.[1] The
following year he filed for a patent on the concept.
Szilárd first attempted to create a chain reaction using beryllium and indium, but these elements did not
produce a chain reaction. In 1936, he assigned the chain-reaction patent to the British Admiralty to
ensure its secrecy (GB patent 630726). Szilárd also was the co-holder, with Nobel Laureate Enrico
Fermi, of the patent on the nuclear reactor (U.S. Patent
2,708,656).
