The influence of Pandit Ravi shankar on Sitar is same as that of Jimmi Hendrix on Guitar. May be more because he popularized Indian classic music all over the world especially in Europe and North America where the trend of rock n roll music was on peak at that time. Even a George Harrison of The Beatles called him as "The Godfather of music". What a great man

+Sourajit Sengupta Not quite. Typically, Hindus preferred the title Pandit and Muslims Ustad. We've have had in India (& later, after partition, in Pakistan as well) scores if not hundreds of Ustads in instrumental music starting from families of stalwarts like (1) Imdad Hussein Khan, his son Enayat Hussein Khan, grandsons Vilayat Hussein Khan and Imrat Hussein Khan, and now the great grandsons Shahid Parvez, Shujaat etc., (2) Hafiz Ali Khan and his son Amjad Ali Khan, (3) Rajab Ali, his disciple Alauddin Khan (though usually referred to as Baba - father - rather than as Ustad), and his descendants, Ali Akbar Khan, Ashis Khan etc., and others like Abdul Halim Zafar Khan, Rais Khan and numerous others. Equally, some of the best-known Pandits in vocal music include Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, his disciples Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and his son Dattatreya Vishnu Paluskar, then Mallikarjun Mansur, Kumar Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi, Jasraj, K G Ginde, Krishnarao Shankar and a host of others. In Kolkata we had Tarapada Chakraborty and Chimnoy Lahiri; later their descendants; now the most famous Ajoy Chakraborty etc.

Thanks to "WOODSTOCK-1969" that the Western music World got to hear and see Indian music.Pandit Ravi.Shankar was the sitar artist that blended West and East.

R.I.P. Ravi Shankar you did so much to bring East and West together and at the same time ,bring the wonderful Indian music to Western ears. My condolences to your family especially your multitalented daughter, Anoushka ,may she carry on your wonderful traditions for many years to come.
