The Railway Children Full TV Movie 2000.

Published on Sep 13, 2014
Heres one the whole family will enjoy !
The Railway Children is a 2000 drama television film based on the novel by E. Nesbit. It was broadcast for the first time in the United Kingdom on 23 April 2000. remake of the Classic 1970 film for TV
Plot -
Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis live a comfortable and carefree upper middle-class life in London with their parents. But when their father (Michael Kitchen), a senior civil servant, is arrested on a charge of treason and found guilty, they are forced to move with their mother to "three chimneys", a cold and rundown cottage in the country near a railway.

Whilst Mother (Jenny Agutter) tries to make a meagre living writing stories and poems she hopes magazines and newspapers will publish, the children seek amusement by watching the trains on the nearby railway line (the fictional Great Northern and Southern Railway) and waving to the passengers. They become friendly with Perks, the cheerful station porter, but feel the wrath of the Stationmaster when Peter is caught trying to steal coal to heat the house.

They become friends with the old gentleman (whose name is never revealed) who regularly takes the 9:15down train. They ask him to assist them with food and medicine when Mother falls ill. He is happy to do so, although Mother is angry and embarrassed.

The children save the lives of passengers on a train by alerting them of a landslide; they'll give shelter to a Russian dissident, Mr Szczepansky, and help to unite him with his family. They'll rescue Jim (JJ Feild), a boarder at a nearby school, who is injured whilst participating in a paper chase.

Bobbie eventually discovers the truth of her father's absence, despite Mother's efforts to shield them from it, and appeals to the Old Gentleman for his help. A Director of the railway company with influential friends, he is able to help prove their father's innocence. The family is reunited.

A friendship and possible future romance between Jim and Bobbie is hinted at.

The area of England to which the family move is not specified, but the railway scenes were filmed on the Bluebell Line.

Hi Mike yes an interesting question well from what i can gather Edith Nesbit’s novel "The Railway Children" tells the story of the trials and adventures of a middle class Edwardian family living in the suburbs of London at the turn of the century. The story is set during the spring, summer and autumn months of 1903.

The German Army of World War II rips Karl Von Steuben from his family and privileged life, forcing him to conceal his American sympathies and Jewish heritage. Stripped of every tie to his home country, he determines to escape. As he crawls to the Siegfried Line, only he knows the hiding place of gold ingots melted from the jewelry of death camp prisoners. Wounded after assuming the identity of a fallen American soldier, Karl briefly deceives even himself. Discharged and shipped to America, he discovers God's unmerited favor in a beautiful Atlanta nurse. But he must return to Germany or relinquish his family fortune and rear children under the name of another man. Will Grace forgive his duplicity and accept him as an American? (less)
This novel is a multi-faceted jewel. While I’m generally not a reader of war stories, this one is outstanding. The account of Karl Van Steuben’s situation kept me intrigued and turning pages. The layers of the synchronized story lines, separate but intertwining, are woven to a beautiful, well thought out climax.

Bombed out churches, lost treasurers, and broken dreams assemble the foundation of this uplifting chronicle. The inhumanities of World War II are exposed and the character of one young man who finds himself on the wrong side of what he believes is the crux of the tale. If he can make a difference, right one wrong, he can keep up his charade.

In this poignant love story commingled with the horrors of war, Lee Carver’s brilliantly exhibited talent shines through. A Secret Life is a must read for all, but plan to stay up late because you can’t put it down.

As war breaks out around them, Karl Von Steuben, fears for his family's safety. With dual American/German citizenship and a secret Jewish heritage on his mother's side, the Christian family finds their faith and lives in danger. Kidnapped and forced into the German army rips Karl away from his privileged life and any hope of escape. He could never shoot an American and looks for an opportunity to cross the lines of war, risking being caught as an enemy. When the opportunity arises, he assumes a dead American soldier's identity and crawls to the Siegfried Line carrying with him the secret hiding place of gold ingots melted from the jewelry of death camp prisoners. A battle injury robs him for a time of his memory, real name and history.

Eventually he gains awareness of the horrible truth but more secrets have to stay buried lest he be branded a war criminal in spite of the valuable aid he provides to the American side of the war effort. Eventually he is discharged and shipped to America under his assumed name. Alone in a foreign land, he rediscovers the faith of his past and the truth of God's unmerited favor in a beautiful Atlanta nurse, Grace. The only problem is, Karl's real name, identity and family fortune lies oversees in post-war Germany. Claiming them and owning the truth of who he is could give him the life he longs for with his new wife, but at the same time jeopardizes their marriage. Would Grace, and his adopted country, ever forgive him?

The twists and turns of this complex tale also covers the story of Karl's family and their struggle during the war. Historically grounded and well researched the characters and their struggles come to life on the page. The heart-rending truth of the horrors of war and the choices that have to be made are well told without being gory. It's a beautifully told tale of love, faith and difficult choices.

Karl von Steuben is a dual citizen German/American whose mother is of Jewish background. Living in Munich during World War II, he has been fortunate that his father has been handling the Reich’s investments and has not been solicited to join the arm as he has an exemption. That all changes one day when he goes out in search of food and gets picked up by a recruiting truck that ships him in the German army. However, learning that he speaks English, his post commander gives him a job as a translator rather than sending him to the front lines. Realizing that he could never kill Americans, he plans to escape across the enemy line and make his way to America. He finally has the chance after he stumbles upon a dead American soldier. After exchanging the uniforms, he makes his way into American territory when he is shot in the back of the head. Days later he wakes up as Henry Viertel with no memory of his past life.
Eventually he regains his memories and is sent back to the States after the war has turned. He meets Grace and falls in love with her, with as Henry he has no college degree with which to work to provide for her. Can he work his way through college again to make a family with Grace? Or should he go back to Germany to claim his family fortune? And if he does, would Grace go with him?

I have to admit, this was a really good read. I was a little skeptical going into it at first with a new author, but it was a very enjoyable book. The story flowed flawlessly. Lee Carver didn’t miss a beat telling the story of this young man. The characters were very well developed and easily to relate to. For a romance, there was still a lot of action and suspense.

There were quite a few little twists throughout the story, but many of them were pretty predictable. My only criticism is that I thought it ended a little too neatly, but maybe that is just my preference. Overall, if you enjoy World War II stories, then you will enjoy this book. Carver did her research to make sure the book is accurate and takes you back a few decades for her tale.

Summer With My German Soldier 1978

Frenchie séverine 8 hours ago
+CREEPER TNT PLAYER Unfortunately young girls or women of that time were called Nazi lovers and whores if they were caught with a German soldier. But i am certain that some Germans were good and sometimes more human than American and french people. I watched recently a french movie whose title is "Suite française".It is about the love between a french woman Lucille and a German officer Bruno who was a pianist and the woman in the movie was considered a whore because she had feelings for the officer.

This film somehow missed my radar all through the years, but it's exceptionally well done. Bruce Davison is completely convincing in his role; his German accent is spot on. When I was younger, I never really liked Kristy McNichol, but now I realize it was probably only juvenile envy. We're only a couple of years apart agewise, and likely as a teenager I was envious of all she had already accomplished at such a young age. I can appreciate in retrospect what a talented actress she was. She had fantastic range and seemed completely convinced of her capacity and abilities even as a very young person. This particular performance, along with her appearance in the television film "Love Mary," really showcase her capabilities. Thank you for sharing this excellent film.

Patty's father hated her because when she was born he said that she looked just like her grandmother. Her father's mother didn't show him any affection and was cruel to him so he carried on with the cruelty. Like the saying goes "The sins of the father."

The influence of Pandit Ravi shankar on Sitar is same as that of Jimmi Hendrix on Guitar. May be more because he popularized Indian classic music all over the world especially in Europe and North America where the trend of rock n roll music was on peak at that time. Even a George Harrison of The Beatles called him as "The Godfather of music". What a great man

+Sourajit Sengupta Not quite. Typically, Hindus preferred the title Pandit and Muslims Ustad. We've have had in India (& later, after partition, in Pakistan as well) scores if not hundreds of Ustads in instrumental music starting from families of stalwarts like (1) Imdad Hussein Khan, his son Enayat Hussein Khan, grandsons Vilayat Hussein Khan and Imrat Hussein Khan, and now the great grandsons Shahid Parvez, Shujaat etc., (2) Hafiz Ali Khan and his son Amjad Ali Khan, (3) Rajab Ali, his disciple Alauddin Khan (though usually referred to as Baba - father - rather than as Ustad), and his descendants, Ali Akbar Khan, Ashis Khan etc., and others like Abdul Halim Zafar Khan, Rais Khan and numerous others. Equally, some of the best-known Pandits in vocal music include Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, his disciples Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and his son Dattatreya Vishnu Paluskar, then Mallikarjun Mansur, Kumar Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi, Jasraj, K G Ginde, Krishnarao Shankar and a host of others. In Kolkata we had Tarapada Chakraborty and Chimnoy Lahiri; later their descendants; now the most famous Ajoy Chakraborty etc.

However, some musicians who were formally associated with universities preferred to use the official appellate Professor, like Bhatkhande's disciple S L Ratanjankar, B R Deodhar etc.Puriya Dhanasri (Live at The Woodstock Festival 1969) - Ravi Shankar

Raga Bihag ( 39.22 )
Live recording from a private party at Ravi Shankar`s North Vista home in 1969.

" On many occasions at the North Vista house, I would give impromptu concerts, and this is one of them, played with dear Alla Rakha accompanying me on Tabla, on august 29, 1969, just one week after we played the Woodstock Music Festival. Unlike our stage performances, it was more relaxed and informal and one can hear the experimental and fun in it. " Ravi Shankar
