Theresienstadt Deputy Commander Executed for Crimes Against Jews and Czechs

Prague, Nov. 19 (JTA) –

Wilhelm Schmidt, a former deputy commandant at the Theresienstadt concentration camp, was executed at Litomerice today shortly after he was convicted on charges of the murder and torture of thousands of Jewish and Czechoslovak prisoners. He was an assistant to Heinrich Joekels who was hanged three weeks ago for similar crimes.



The same court found Theodor Hochhaus guilty of membership in the S.S. corps, but imposed no punishment. Twenty-five Jewish and Czechoslovak prisoners testified in Hochhaus' defense asserting that he had treated prisoners "humanely."
