Witnesses Testify That Theresienstadt Commander Ordered 10 Jews Shot for Stolen Rabbit

Prague, Oct. 24 (JTA) –

Jewish witnesses today declared that Heinrich Joeckel, former commandant of a section of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, who is on trial at Litomerice for the murder and torture of Jews and Czechs at the camp, issued an order that ten Jews would be shot for every rabbit missing from the camp's hutch.

In an interview with Joeckel a Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent asked him what happened to numerous Jews who disappeared from Theresienstadt and have never been traced. Joeckel's answer was evasive. The correspondent reported that he does not appear to regret the murder of thousands of Jews committed under his orders.
